Community Outreach

The Department of Management, Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation and the full-time MBA Program, collaborate to annually offer two applied learning experiences whereby graduate students "walk in the footsteps" of entrepreneurs, both for-profit and social cause, to develop skills critical to successful careers as creators of useful change in organizations. Guided by a problem solving framework, the out-of-the classroom courses, BA518: Innovation in Practice and MGT552: Entrepreneurial Strategy Implementation, afford students the opportunity to apply classroom obtained knowledge to real challenges currently faced by organizations.

The Innovation in Practice course focuses exclusively on non-profit organizations. A total of 393 students have collaborated with 83 Tennessee based non-profit organizations since 2004. Students and faculty have devoted 31,397 hours helping these organizations while learning about non-profits and improving both innovative and critical thinking skills.

The Entrepreneurial Strategy Implementation course focuses exclusively on strategy implementation challenges faced by entrepreneurial-minded, for-profit organizations. Since inception in 2005, 118 graduate students and faculty have devoted 14,337 hours to 34 Tennessee ventures. Importantly, the two courses afford The University of Tennessee the opportunity to achieve its dual mandate as a land grant university to educate students and outreach to our communities. Since inception of the courses, 438 graduate students have completed applied learning experiences with 117 organizations. A total of 45,734 student and faculty outreach hours have been invested in non-profit and for-profit learning experiences in Tennessee communities.

Coupled with the other two applied learning MBA E&I courses (MG551- New Venture Planning and MG560 Monetization of Technology Enabled Social Media) that form the MBA E&I curriculum, Bloomberg Businessweek recently ranked UT the 17th MBA Entrepreneurship Specialty among US public institutions. Our students have started 36 new ventures.
